Implications of Binary Properties for Theories of Star Formation
نویسنده
چکیده
The overall frequency and other statistical properties of binary systems suggest that star formation is intrinsically a complex and chaotic process, and that most binaries and single stars actually originate from the decay of multiple systems. Interactions between stars forming in close proximity to each other may play an important role in the star formation process itself, for example via tidally induced accretion from disks. Some of the energetic activity of newly formed stars could be due to bursts of rapid accretion triggered by interactions with close companions.

Astrometry of the Becklin-neugebauer Object’s Ejection from Θc
We show that the proper motion of the Becklin-Neugebauer (BN) object is consistent with its dynamical ejection from the ΘC binary, contrary to recent claims by Gómez et al. Continued radio observations of BN and future precise astrometric observations of ΘC with SIM and the Orion Nebula Cluster with GAIA can constrain the properties of this ejection event, with implications for theories of how ...

متن کاملNot Alone: Tracing the Origins of Very Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs Through Multiplicity Studies
The properties of multiple stellar systems have long provided important empirical constraints for star formation theories, enabling (along with several other lines of evidence) a concrete, qualitative picture of the birth and early evolution of normal stars. At very low masses (VLM; M . 0.1 M⊙), down to and below the hydrogen burning minimum mass, our understanding of formation processes is not...
متن کاملShort gamma-ray bursts as a possible probe of binary neutron star mergers
We study the properties of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), based on the assumption that they are all connected to the binary neutron star mergers, whose formation mechanism contains a large amount of uncertainty. In particular, the merger time distribution is focused on, which is essential for short GRB rate estimate; we simply parameterize it as Pm(t) ∝ t α with lower cutoff time-scale τ . The ...
متن کاملPeriod change and δ Scuti pulsations of eclipsing binary star RZ Cassiopiae
RZ Cas is an Algol-type partial eclipsing binary, the secondary component of which has filled its Roche lobe. Its visual magnitude is 6.18 and its period is 1.195 days. The most important characteristics of RZ Cas are period change (due to mass transfer) and anomalies in the primary minimum of its light curve (due to δ Scuti pulsations). In this paper, light curves of RZ Cas are obtained using ...
